Viyoni Janma: An Astrological Inquiry into Non-Human Births

The great Indian astrologer Varaha Mihira, in his classical work Brihat Jataka, suggested certain planetary positions that indicate the birth of a Viyoni, or a non-human being. The key combinations he presented are as follows:

Verse 1: "When benefics are powerless and malefics are powerful, and when impotent planets (eunuch planets: Saturn and Mercury) are in quadrants (Kendra houses), the birth must be foretold of objects that have a resemblance to the nature of the Dwadasamsa (D-12) occupied by the Moon at the time. Or, when under similar conjunctions the birth sign (ascendant) is aspected by impotent planets, the birth of Viyonis must be predicted."

Verse 2: "If powerful malefics occupy their own Navamsas, if powerless benefics occupy others’ Navamsas, and if the ascendant is a Viyoni sign (an animal sign like Aries, Taurus, Leo, or the latter half of Sagittarius), then the birth of Viyoni creatures must be predicted."

A Critical Inquiry: The Challenge of Universal Application

This raises a fundamental logistical question: Is it possible for certain planetary positions to be fixed exclusively for different kinds of creatures? In our world, a human child is born almost every minute, a continuous process that covers every possible ascendant and every Dwadasamsa division throughout the day. Where, then, is the astrological "gap" in time for creatures other than humans to take birth?

It seems improbable that specific planetary positions can be assigned solely to Viyoni births. It is more likely that within a certain planetary configuration, the birth of all Yonis (species) is possible. The celestial clock does not stop for one species to be born before another.

This leads me to believe that some rules of astrology must work within the range of possibility for a given species. For instance, a combination indicating a "long life" may grant a lifespan of 100 years to a human, but that same combination might provide a lifespan of only 20 years for a dog. The astrological principle is the same, but its manifestation is scaled to the biological potential of the creature.

This does not mean Varaha Mihira's opinion is worthless. On the contrary, it holds significant information, even if we cannot use it to differentiate a human birth from a non-human one based on planetary positions alone. It points to certain qualities and influences present at the time of birth. Furthermore, these principles may be highly useful in horary astrology (Prashna).

Personal Observations: The Prominence of Eunuch Planets

I live in a small village where I have many opportunities to observe the birth of cattle. Through these observations, I have noticed a consistent and prominent theme during the birth of Viyonis: the overwhelming influence of the eunuch planets, Saturn and Mercury.

This influence tends to manifest in one or more of the following ways:

  • Influence on the Ascendant: The rising sign or its lord is often connected to Saturn or Mercury.
  • Influence on the Moon: The Moon, representing the mind and consciousness, is frequently associated with or aspected by these planets.
  • Influence on the Atmakaraka: In a vast majority of cases I have observed, the Atmakaraka (the planet with the highest degree, signifying the soul's desire) is either Saturn or Mercury itself, or it is posited in a sign owned by Saturn or Mercury, or is otherwise strongly linked with them.
  • Influence on the Day and Hora Lord: The lord of the day of the week (Vaar Lord) and the Hora Lord* at the time of birth are also often Saturn or Mercury, or under their influence.
  • Other Factors: The presence of cruel ‘Nitya Yogas’ and inauspicious Karanas (like Vishti/Bhadra) is also a common feature.

A Methodological Note: Determining the Moment of Birth for Animals

The birth process among cattle and other animals can take several minutes, making it difficult to pinpoint an exact time. The head is the primary part of the body, and all other limbs are regulated by it. It is the first part to emerge and receive the direct influence and impression of the outer world—and thus, the prevailing planetary positions in the heavens. Hence, the moment the head fully appears must be considered the moment of birth for astrological purposes.

After studying all the examples, we can safely conclude the impact of eunuch planets at the time of birth other than humane.
