Finding a Supportive Place to Live: An Astrological Guide

Finding a Supportive Place to Live: An Astrological Guide

Reproduced from EST May 2015

"Which places will suit me?" is a frequently asked question posed to astrologers. It is often observed that some people feel stuck and struggle in a particular place, only to thrive and live happily in another. This article describes a method for judging a favorable place to live, based on a deep analysis of one's natal horoscope.

The first step is to select the zodiacal signs and Nakshatras (stars) that are inherently benefic for you according to your birth chart, using the following methods.

How to Select a Beneficial Zodiac Sign

a) From the Ascendant Lord's Position:

The signs occupied by your ascendant lord in both the Rasi (D-1) and Navamsa (D-9) charts are highly supportive. Additionally, the signs trine (1st, 5th, 9th) to these and the sign 7th from them also become benefic zones. If the ascendant lord occupies an odd or an even sign in both the Rasi and Navamsa charts simultaneously, then all odd signs or all even signs, respectively, become supportive for you. Signs that receive an aspect from your ascendant lord in the Rasi chart also gain a benefic nature.

b) From the Moon's Navamsa Position:

Note the Navamsa sign occupied by your natal Moon. The zodiacal sign where the lord of this Navamsa sign attains its exaltation becomes a very good sign for you. The signs trine to this exaltation sign and the sign 7th from it also share this auspicious quality, albeit with slightly less magnitude.

c) Signs to Avoid:

The Navamsa sign occupied by your 8th lord, and especially the 64th Navamsa sign, and the Navamsa sign occupied by your 64th Navamsa lord, are unfavorable; these signs should be avoided. (The 64th Navamsa is derived from the longitude of your 8th house cusp, calculated as per the Sripati method.)

d) General Affliction:

Also, avoid any sign that is heavily afflicted by multiple malefic planets in either your Rasi or Navamsa chart.

How to Select a Benefic Nakshatra (Star)

A) The Tara Scheme (Constellational Relationship)

There are three primary reference points for calculating your benefic Tara groups. While you can check all three, you may find through observing life events that one scheme is more dominant for you.

1.    From the Navamsa Moon's Nakshatra: Calculate the Navamsa longitude of your natal Moon and identify the Nakshatra at that position. Use this as your primary reference star. The stars falling in the 2nd (Sampat), 4th (Kshema), 6th (Sadhana), and 8th (Mitra) Tara groups from this star are fairly good. The 1st (Janma) and 9th (Parama Mitra) Tara groups are also generally good but can have a certain "killing" or intensely transformative nature. Always avoid the stars belonging to the 3rd (Vipat) and 5th (Pratyak) Tara groups. The stars of the 7th (Vadha) Tara group are also generally avoidable, but a star in this group may be acceptable if it falls in a benefic Tara group from your Rasi Moon's star and is located in a sign that is benefic for you. (Note: The 7th Tara is related to the 'Mahendra' group in the match-making principles of Prashna Marg).

2.    From the Rasi Moon's Nakshatra: Also, mark the benefic Tara groups as counted from your natal (Rasi) Moon's star.

3.    From the Ascendant Lord's Navamsa Nakshatra: Take the Navamsa longitude of your ascendant lord, mark the rising star there, and select the stars of the benefic Taras from this point.

4.    Take the Navamsa sign of the Moon and mark the 2nd zodiacal sign from it. Now consider trine and the 7th sign from it. Or simply consider the 2nd-6th-10th and 8th signs from the Navamsa sign of the Moon. If these zodiac signs are not in the 8th trine from the Moon or the 64th Navamsa from the Ascendant, then it is successful.

The zodiacal sign of place, mainly the Navamsa sign of it, from these special signs greatly favors much to rise high. Other signs, if they are not otherwise good enough, only support during a good period, but at an adverse time, they create unbearable problems, and one can live at the cost of humiliation or with status below then own ability.

5.    The Ascendant and mainly its Navamsa trine and the seventh Zodiac sign pull you to stay. If it proves auspicious in other ways, then it proves very good.

B) From the Moon's Dispositor:

Note the Navamsa sign of your natal Moon. The Nakshatras ruled by the lord of this sign are fairly good for you without reservation, even if they happen to fall in a challenging Tara group. While they will support you significantly, they could still present some health-related issues if they fall into a bad Tara. The stars ruled by your Rasi Moon's sign lord also have a benefic nature.

C) Influence of the 8th House:

Note the Nakshatra rising on your 8th house cusp and the Nakshatra of your Khara Navamsa sign (the Navamsa of the 8th house cusp). The benefic traits of stars that are trine to these two Nakshatras may be somewhat reduced, even if these stars fall in a benefic Tara and are ruled by a Yogakaraka planet for you. Conversely, the Navamsa stars of the ascendant and 9th house may be particularly good.

D) From Yogakaraka Planets:

If the stars ruled by your Yogakaraka planets also fall in a good Tara group from either your Rasi Moon or Navamsa Moon, they provide excellent results. The star of the 7th lord can also be good, provided its other owned sign is not an evil house (6th, 8th, or 12th).

(To obtain the Navamsa longitude of any planet or house cusp, a method is to simply multiply its Rasi longitude by nine and adjust the resulting figure to be within the 0–360-degree range of the zodiac.)

Applying the Method

Once you have determined your benefic signs and stars, you can calculate the zodiacal sign of any place using the formula provided at the end of this article. If the sign and star of that place are favorable for you according to the methods described above, you can consider it a supportive place to live.

Illustrative Case Studies

(A note on celebrity charts: Using the horoscopes of celebrities for research can be a risky endeavor, as many are based on disputed or official-only birth dates, which may be inaccurate. With the advent of mandatory birth certificates, data has become more reliable.)

1. Dr. B.V. Raman (August 8, 1912, 19:15, Bangalore - 77E35, 13N00)

  • Chart: Aquarius Ascendant, Moon in Taurus (1s 23°24'), Ascendant Lord Saturn in Taurus (1s 10°09').
  • Benefic Signs:
    • His ascendant lord, Saturn, is in Aries Navamsa. Therefore, the signs Aries, Leo, Sagittarius (trines to Aries), and Libra (7th from Aries) are good for him.
    • The Navamsa sign of his Moon is Leo. The lord of Leo is the Sun, whose exaltation sign is Aries. This reinforces the beneficence of Aries and its trine signs.
  • Benefic Stars:
    • His Navamsa longitude of the Moon is Leo (4s) 00°36', which falls in Magha Nakshatra. Counting from Magha, the stars of Ketu (ruling Magha), Venus, Moon, Rahu, Saturn, and Mercury are good for him (falling in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th Tara groups).
  • Location Analysis: Bangalore
    • Coordinates: 12.967° N, 77.567° E.
    • Calculation: Zodiacal sign = 9 * (12.967 - 77.567) = -581.4 => -581.4 + 720 = 138.6°. This is Leo (4s) 18°36', which falls in Purva Phalguni Nakshatra.
    • Conclusion: Dr. Raman spent his life in Bangalore and accomplished all his monumental work from this place. Astrologically, the city's sign (Leo) is one of his primary benefic signs, and its star (Purva Phalguni, ruled by Venus) falls in the benefic 2nd Tara (Sampat) from his Navamsa Moon's star (Magha). The city was perfectly suitable for him.

2. Lata Mangeshkar (September 28, 1929, 23:00, Mumbai)

  • Location Analysis 1: Italy (Rome - 41.90° N, 12.48° E)
    • Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius (8s) 24°45' with Purvaashadha star.
    • Suitability: His ascendant lord, Mercury, is in Sagittarius Navamsa, making Sagittarius a benefic sign for him. His Navamsa longitude of the Moon is Virgo (5s) 09°33' (Uttara Phalguni, as per some calculations, or Hasta depending on precision). Italy's star, Purva Ashadha, falls in the 9th Tara group (Parama Mitra) from its Navamsa star. He benefited from Italy, finding his spouse and work there.
  • Location Analysis 2: Sriperumbudur (Death Place - 12.97° N, 79.95° E)
    • Zodiac Sign: Cancer with Ashlesha star.
    • Analysis: His 64th Navamsa lord is Mars, which occupies Capricorn Navamsa. The sign Cancer is 7th from Capricorn and receives the aspect of this death-inflicting Mars. The star of the place, Ashlesha, falls in the 7th Tara (Vadha) from his Navamsa star.

4. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (January 12, 1917, 8:00, near Bilaspur - 22N03, 82E12)

  • Chart: Capricorn Ascendant (9s 18°13'), Asc Lord Saturn in Cancer (3s 04°54'), Moon in Leo (4s 09°30'). Navamsa longitude of Moon: Gemini (2s) 09°30'.

    • Seelisberg, Switzerland (Pisces sign, Uttarabhadrapada star): Pisces is 7th from the benefic Virgo. The star is ruled by Saturn and falls in the 2nd Tara (Sampat) from his Navamsa Moon and the 8th Tara (Mitra) from his Rasi Moon.

Extension: Finding a Marriage Partner's Location

You can also use a similar method to analyze the location of your first, successful, or most memorable marriage partner.

1.    First, calculate the cusps of the 7th and 11th houses using the Sripati method.

2.    Then, calculate the Navamsa longitude of these two points.

3.    The zodiacal sign of your partner's birthplace will likely be the same sign, a trine sign, or the 7th sign from these calculated Navamsa signs.

4.    The natal Moon star of your partner and the star of their birthplace will likely fall in a benefic Tara from the Navamsa star of your 7th house cusp. (This analysis requires a highly accurate and rectified birth time.)

Example a: Smt. Sonia Gandhi (December 9, 1946, 21:29, Turin, Italy)

  • Her 7th House Cusp: 9s 23°46'. Navamsa of 7th Cusp: Leo (4s 03°54'), Magha star.
  • Her 11th House Cusp: 1s 15°58'. Navamsa of 11th Cusp: Taurus (1s 23°42').
  • She married Rajiv Gandhi, who was born in Mumbai (zodiac sign Scorpio, star Jyestha) and whose natal Moon star was Purva Phalguni.
  • Analysis: The sign of her spouse's birthplace, Scorpio, is 7th from her 11th house Navamsa sign (Taurus). The star of the place (Jyestha) and the star of her partner (Purva Phalguni) both fall in benefic Tara groups (9th and 2nd, respectively) from Magha, the Navamsa star of her 7th house.

Example b: Mr. Rajiv Gandhi (August 20, 1944, 9:22:25 (war time), Mumbai)

  • His 7th House Cusp: 11s 01°30'. Navamsa of 7th Cusp: Cancer (3s 13°30'), Pushya star.
  • His spouse, Sonia Gandhi, was born in Turin, Italy (zodiac sign Pisces, star Uttarabhadrapad). Her natal Moon star is Ardra.
  • Analysis: The sign of Turin, Pisces, is trine to the Navamsa of his 7th house (Cancer). The star of the place, Uttarabhadrapad, falls in the very first Tara (Janma) from the star of his 7th house's Navamsa (Pushya). His spouse's star, Ardra, falls in the benefic 8th Tara (Mitra) from Pushya.

How to Calculate the Zodiacal Sign of a Place

(This formula is used throughout the article)

1.    Take the longitude and latitude of the place. Convert them into decimal degrees. Use North (N) and East (E) coordinates as positive (+), and South (S) and West (W) coordinates as negative (-).

2.    Formula: Zodiacal Degrees = 9 * (Latitude – Longitude)

3.    Make the resultant figure positive and within 360 degrees by adding or subtracting 360 as many times as needed.

Convert this degree value into a Zodiac sign (e.g., 0-30° is Aries, 30-60° is Taurus, etc.). (Note: The author has a further refinement step: "The value we get should be increased by the nearest Navamsa-pada," which may be a personal technique requiring further elaboration. For political purposes, the author suggests taking the coordinates of the capital and extending the influence to the last limit of the calculated star within the same sign.)
