Badhak House / Planet

!!Badhak Planet!!

The Concept of 'Badhak' in Vedic Astrology: The Obstructing House and its Lord

In Vedic astrology, the term ‘Badhak’ (बाधक) translates to ‘obstruction’ or ‘hindrance’. It refers to a specific house in a horoscope that, along with its ruling planet (the ‘Badhakesh’ or Badhak lord), becomes a source of obstacles and difficulties for the native. The determination of this house is based on the modality (nature) of the ascendant sign.

How Badhak Influences a Horoscope

The influence of the Badhak house and its lord manifests in two primary ways:

  1. The Badhak Lord as an Obstructing Agent: The Badhak lord, by its very nature, carries an obstructing influence. It tends to reduce the beneficial results of the house where it is placed in the horoscope.

  2. The Badhak House as a Zone of Weakness: The significations of any house whose lord is posited in the Badhak house are diminished to some extent. The exact impact depends on several other factors in the chart, but a planet's placement in the Badhak house is generally a point of vulnerability.

The Exception: When Obstruction Becomes Auspicious

A significant and powerful exception to the malefic nature of the Badhak lord arises from its placement.

While the Badhak lord is generally considered problematic, it is most welcome to be placed in one of the 'evil' houses (Dusthanas), namely the 6th, 8th, or 12th house from the ascendant.

When a Badhak lord is positioned in one of these houses, it can generate a powerful and positive effect similar to a Viparita Raja Yoga. This placement can bestow upon the native:

  • Name and fame

  • Wealth and success

  • Potentially, a longer life by neutralizing obstructive forces.

However, this auspicious outcome for the native often comes at a cost to the living significations (karakatvas) of the houses involved. The Badhak lord, in this position, can harm the external significations related to both the house it rules (the Badhak house) and the evil house it occupies.

Example:

  • For a Libra Ascendant (a movable sign), the 11th house is the Badhak house.

  • The lord of the 11th house is the Sun, which becomes the Badhakesh.

  • If this Sun is placed in the 6th house (in the sign of Pisces), it fulfills the condition of the Badhak lord being in an evil house.

  • Positive Result for Native: This placement can be highly beneficial for the native's own status, success over enemies, and personal growth.

  • Negative Result for Significations: This same placement can cause harm or misery to the living entities signified by the houses involved. It can negatively affect the physical well-being of an elder sibling (11th house signification) and cause harm to a maternal uncle or create issues with enemies and debts (6th house significations).

Ultimately, the net result depends on the overall disposition of the chart, including the aspects and positions of other planets.

Determining the Badhak House

The following table outlines the Badhak house for each type of ascendant. This is the most popular and effective view used in natal astrology.

Nature of Ascendant Sign

Ascendant Signs

Badhak House

Movable (Chara)

Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn

11th House

Fixed (Sthira)

Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius

9th House

Dual (Dvisvabhava)

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces

7th House

(A Note on Other Views: While the above is the standard rule, it's worth noting that some classical texts, such as 'Prashna Marg', present an alternative method for identifying the Badhaka. That view is more complex and less commonly used in natal chart analysis, finding more application in horary astrology.)

The formula for calculating the Zodiacal sign of a place is a wonderful invention in the field of predictive astrology. It has many uses, and one of them is to know probable trends of elections.

The annual chart of a country or state provides a significant hint about upcoming elections in a particular year. The chart of the moment of the Sun transition over the zodiac sign of the capital is the annual chart of the state or country. The transit of planets and ascendants on the day of the election at the starting time of the voting process also tells much about the trends of the election. But in this paper, I will discuss the annual chart only regarding trends of the upcoming election in the state.

Tara Chakra

Tara Chakra
The word means Tara. It is a very important predictive tool in astrology. We can ascertain the mood of Nakshatras as positive or negative for a particular native with the help of it. It is an effective tool to determine the transit result. This factor is widely used in Muhurta matters.
In this scheme, 27 stars are distributed in nine groups of ‘Taras’, having three stars each. So, there are nine Taras having three stars in each, namely Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyari, Sadhak, Vadh or Nidhan, Mitra, and Ati-Mitra. All three stars in a particular Tara are ruled by the same planet.
It is more relevant in the dark half according to some as said by sage Narad “कृष्ण पक्षे बली तारा, शुक्ल पक्षे बली शशि”.
