Ayanamsa on the practical ground

 !!Ayanamsa on the practical ground!!

(Modern Astrology, May 2025)

The Ayanamsa is a main pillar of Vedic or sidereal astrology. This is the base for the correct position of planets. Unfortunately, it is important as it is disputed too.

Ayanamsa (Sanskrit ayanāṃśaAyana "movement" + aṃśa "component") is the Sanskrit term in Vedic astronomy for the amount of precession in astrology, which is the longitudinal difference between the tropical (Sāyana) and sidereal (Nirayana) zodiacs.

There are many Ayanamsas in vogue. Everyone is free to create their own! Astrology is not a science until now, like science, which has an undisputed and globally accepted base.

Out of many Ayanamsas, only three are important and widely used. These are Lahiri, Raman, and Krishnamurthy. The values of Lahiri and Krishnamurthy Ayanamsas are too close and have some differences only on the second level. So, we will not consider both separately. So, only two Ayanamsa are in the picture, Raman and Lahiri. I don`t know much about the astronomical mathematical process that works in this issue. Here, I will compare the above two on practical grounds with the help of some astrological clues. The concept or rule that is logical and systematic to surely fit on the practical ground. I found Lahiri Ayanamsa more accurate than others. But please don`t think of it as any kind of remark to others. This is part of the learning process.

Dr. B. V. Raman spent his whole life in the process of reviving and rejuvenating astrology. He also arranged various predictive rules in a systematic order and taught us the application process for various rules together. He brings many hidden clues into light. He distinguished astrology from Tantrism. He was the greatest servant of astrology in the modern era without any doubt. But no man on earth is absolute. Only God is 100%.

The difference in longitudinal value between these two Ayanamsas is within one to two degrees (1°24´25´´). Hence, to judge the correctness of Ayansamsa, it is necessary to examine factors that are changeable with this difference. So it is necessary to examine divisional charts. Secondly, the factors sign, star, etc, which are at the junction point about this degree difference may help the process. But these factors can help us only with undisputed or unfailing clues.

Now let us start:

1-    There is a Sutra in the “Jaimini Sutram”, 3rd pada, 108

Jaimini Sutram by Dr.Suresh Chandra Mishra

                                    Ranjan Publications, New Delhi

The learned author explained this sutra for the native of the extra limb (Adhikang) and writes that if the Atmakarak planet gets positioned at a sign of debility in the Trisamsha chart, then the native may have an extra limb. However, it is not clear whether it applies to the Adhana chart or the Birth chart. I examined it on some birth charts and found its accuracy using the Vedic Trisamsha chart with Lahiri Ayanamsa.

Vedic Trisamsa is based upon equal thirty divisions of a sign, each of one degree, regularly counted from the sign Aries for odd signs and from the sign Libra for even signs.

A-   A male native was born with six fingers in his hand.

Born on: January 25, 1990 at 02h 30m at 23N08 & 78E43

In this case, the Atmakarak planet is Saturn, and its longitude is:-

As per Lahiri Ayanamsa: 8s 24°41´; the 25th degree of sign Sagittarius

It falls in debility at the sign Aries in Vedic Trisamsha.

As per Raman Ayanamsa: 8s 26°07´58´´; the 27th degree of sign Sagittarius

It is at sign Gemini in the Vedic D-30 chart and does not fulfill the condition of the Sutra.

Here is another supporting clue for the above Sutra from Jaimini Sutram, 3rd Pada, 109 by the same author.

It asks for the position of Atmakarak at the sign Capricorn or Libra in the Trimsamsa chart for the result of the defective limb, either extra or less.

A-   A girl was born with extra fingers in the hands as well as in the feet.

Born on: May 16, 1992 at 5h 57m at Bhind (M.P.), 78E48, 26N34

The Atmakarak planet is Saturn, and its longitude is as per:

Lahiri Ayanamsa: 9s 24°36´; the 25th degree of sign Capricorn

So, the D-30 sign of Saturn belongs to the sign Libra according to the Sutra.

Raman ayanamsa: 9s 26°03´; the 27th degree of sign Capricorn

So, the D-30 sign is Sagittarius, not according to Sutra.

B-    A boy with extra fingers.

Born on: July 6, 2011, at 8h 15m at 78E43, 23N08; near Gadarwara (MP)

The Atmakarak planet is the Moon, and its longitude is as follows:

Lahiri Ayanamsa: 4s 21°03´; the 22nd degree of the sign Leo.

So, the Trimsamsa sign of the Moon, the Capricorn, is according to the Sutra.

Raman Ayanamsa: 4s 22°29´51´´; the 23rd degree of the sign Leo belongs to the sign Aquarius in the Trimsamsa chart and is not saturated in the condition given in the Sutra.

There may be more planetary situations responsible for extra limbs in the body. The given clue is only one of them.

1-    A case of hanging: This example is taken from the June 2012 issue of Modern Astrology under the brain teaser column. The native committed suicide by hanging.

Born on: October 28, 1994, at 23h 15m at 76E56, 12N42

The ascendant as per Lahiri Ayanamsa is Gemini at 29 degrees and 28 minutes, while as per Raman Ayanamsa, it is at the sign Cancer with zero degrees and 55 minutes.

Sign Gemini rules over the neck of the human body parts and the process of hanging also involves the neck. The body part denoted by the ascendant is always sensitive enough to receive injury or illness. Many natives who suffered by hanging were born in the Gemini ascendant.

a-    Nathuram Godse, sentenced to death by hanging, was a native of Gemini ascendant.

Born on: May 19, 1910, at 8h 25m at 73E54, 18N30 Pune

b-    Mr. Julfikar Ali Bhutto was also sentenced to death by the Pakistan government. He was also a native of Gemini ascendant.

Born on: January 5, 1928, at 17h 03m at 68E15, 27N33, Larkhana, Sindh, Pak

c-     A native of Gemini ascendant committed suicide by hanging.

Born on: October 6, 1918 at 23h 30m at Kolkata; 88E22, 22N32

The most sensitive ascendant for hanging is Gemini, and in second place it is Aries. Why Aries! The 3rd house of the Aries ascendant belongs to the Gemini, which can also tell about the mode of death. In the Jaimini system, the 3rd house gets more response to fix the mode of death. This house also gets the death-inflicting quality as per the rule of ‘Bhavat_Bhavam’ as the 8th place from the 8th house in the Parashari system.

Mode of death: It is a well-known and popular feature of Vedic astrology that the mode of death resembles the nature of Drekkana falling in the 8th house. So, to hang, it should fall the ‘Paashadhar’ Drekkana in the 8th house. ‘Paash’ (पाश) means a trap or knot of rope. The ‘Paashadhar’ Drekkanas is the 1st of the sign Taurus, and the 1st and 3rd Drekkana of the sign Capricorn according to ‘Hora Makarand’. There are divergent views, but the Drekkana coding given in the ‘Hora Makarand’ is well fit on practical grounds.

So, the 3rd Drekkana of Capricorn falls in the 8th house as per the Sripati system (9s-28° 56`) as per Lahiri Ayanamsa, while it is the 1st of sign Aquarius (10s-00°23`) according to Raman Ayanamsa in our main example taken from Modern Astrology.

It does not affect the Drekkana range using either Ayanamsa in the sub examples a, b, and c, showing ‘Paashadhar’ Drekkana first, first, and third of sign Capricorn in the 8th house.

1-    A case of snake biting:

Prashna Marg contains a rare combination of snake bites that is decisive after other combinations. I have seen its accuracy in each serious case of snake biting that I have. I think this is an unfailing clue.

Parivesha is a sub-planet derived from the position of the Sun. The Author said if the longitude of Parivesh falls in the ascendant, snake biting is the result.

*: Parivesha is a sub-planet. We can calculate it after deducting the longitude of the Sun from one sign, sixteen degrees, and forty minutes (1s-16°40`).

The Navamsa sign of Parivesha* surely falls in the trine signs from the ascendant or Navamsa. It can aspect ascendant from the seventh house, so we should consider this house also. The seventy-five percent aspect of the planet goes to the ascendant from the tenth house. So, in the case of middle and long life spans, it must be considered.

Born on: April 13, 1990 at 23h 40m at 78E43, 23N08

As per Lahiri Ayanamsa:

The ascendant: 8s 8°19´; Navamsa sign is Gemini, the Sun: 11s 29°49´31´´;

The Parivesh: 1s 16°51´, Navamsa sign is Gemini

As per Raman Ayanamsa:

The ascendant: 8s 09°45´; Navamsa sign is Gemini, the Sun: 0s 1°16´13´´

The Parivesh: 1s 15°23´47´´, Navamsa: Taurus

The native was dead on account of a snake bite. The Parivesh Navamsa sign Gemini, as per Lahiri, is in the 7th from Rasi ascendant and at ascendant in the Navamsa as per rule.

But the Parivesh and its Navamsa Taurus, as per Raman Ayanamsa, are neither in the Rashi nor in the Navamsa in the desired houses.

1-    The case of Mrs. Gayatri Devi Vasudev and Pushkara Navamsa:

It is said about Pushkar Navamsas that this zone of the zodiac is highly auspicious to take birth in or even in Muhurtas. In the words of Mr. C. S. Patel, “It is found in practice that natives having their rising Navamsa falling either in Vargottama or in Pushkara Navamsa are outstanding in their careers.”

The definition of Pushkara Navamsa has been found in the ‘Vidyamadhaviyam’ part 1. The ‘Dev Keralam’ used this concept in many places, and ‘Jatak Parijat’ also mentioned it.

The Pushkra Navamsas are the 7th and 9th zones of Navamsa in fiery signs, the 3rd and 5th for earthy signs, the 6th and 8th for airy signs, and the 1st and 3rd zones of Navamsa for watery signs.

Born on: October 24, 1949, at 15h 33m in Bangalore

As per Lahiri Ayanamsa, the degree of ascendant is 26th of the sign Aquarius, which falls in the zone of Pushkara Navamsa! As per Raman Ayanamsa, the ascendant is at the 28th degree, covering Gemini Navamsa.

This is not a single case of Pushkara Navamsa; many other famous, good-quality persons were born in this zodiac range.

a-    Mahatma Gandhi: October 2, 1869, at 8h 40m at Porbandar (Gujarat)

I don’t know the time zone of that time, but many other astrologers used his ascendant degree, 25th of the sign Libra, at a given time!

b-    Bhaskaranand Lohani: June 24, 1931 at 15h 45m at Almora (Uttaranchal)

His birth ascendant is also at the 25th degree of the sign Libra, which is the zone of Pushkara Navamsa.

He was a Yogi in the true sense and also a good astrologer.

c-     Dr. Nimai Banerjee: March 19, 1947 at 21h 30m at Cuttack (Orissa)

He was birth in Libra ascendant at 25 degrees the zone of Pushkara Navamsa!

He is a good astrologer from north northeast area and publishes a monthly magazine of astrology.

d-    Atal Bihari Vajpai: December 25, 1924 at 3h 45m at Gwalior

His birth ascendant is also at the zone of Pushkar Navamsa in the sign Libra at the 26th degree.

(This birth time is correct, but Mr. Rao vitiated it to the Scorpio ascendant.)
