There are various methods in Vedic astrology to ascertain the Moon sign and star of certain relatives from the horoscope of any native.
The horoscope of Mr. Rahul Gandhi is disputed. There is different opinion regarding his birth time. Some astrologers consider it as 5/50 early hour of the date 19/06/1970 and other takes it after sun rise or even at about noon. However his birth date 19/06/1970, and place, New Delhi undisputed. On the given date the Moon star Jyestha and sign Scorpio was running up to 10/45 hour and after this the Mula star and sign Sagittarius was in operation.
Now let us search his Moon sign and star, taking help from the horoscopes of his close relatives. In this process, we shall examine the horoscopes of his father, Mr. Rajeeva Gandhi, his mother Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and his sister Smt. Priyanka Gandhi.
In this pursuit, we shall apply following rules of astrology.
1- Take the house representing certain relation as the 5th house for son and 11th house for elder brother.
Take the Navamsa sign of that certain house lord, the moon sign may be trine to it for certain relation.
Or the aspected sign by that house lord may also be his moon sign.
B- We shall also apply this rule to the natural and Char Karak planet of said relation.
2- Add the longitude of the ascendant lord to the house lord in concern. The resultant sign or its Navamsa sign may be the moon sign of the relative represented by that house.
B- Add the longitude of Atmakarak to the Char Karak representing a certain relation. The resultant Rasi or its Navamsa sign may be the moon sign of the relative represented by that Char Karak.
- We shall also consider the sign occupied by certain house lords and the trine sign in the Rasi chart (D-1) for a safe conclusion, though more emphasis is given to the Navamsa position in the textbook of astrology. We shall also provide more weight to the Navamsa position but not ignoring it all the positions of Rasi chart, though the decisive factor is the strength of that planet in the Rasi or in the Navamsa chart. The judging process of the strength of planets is always not so easy and conclusive often leads to confusion. So we shall provide 60 marks to the navamsa position and 40 marks to the position of Rasi chart. In actual practice often it follows the Navamsa position but sometimes also according to the Rasi chart.
- Secondly, we shall consider the 7th trine signs also in the safest way, as if the said lord posited in odd sign then we shall consider all the odd signs and if the said lord posited in the even sign then we shall consider all the even signs. A planet is always an aspect to the 7th sign from it and the trine sign also may provide the same result according to the rules of astrology. Hence it is logical to consider the 7th trine signs. Here we have to finalize only the one from Scorpio and Sagittarius. So if we get odd or even sign as a result, then his moon sign will be clear; and once the moon sign becomes final, the moon star automatically will be concluded.
1- First of all, let us examine the horoscope of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi the mother of the native and most reliable and authentic relation. The native is her first child. Her birth detail and horoscope is as under-
09/12/1946, 21/30 hour at Turin (Italy); the time zone of the place is +1/00 hour and no daylight saving scheme observe.

Ascendant= 3-23/58, the 5th house- 7-16/12 as per the method of Sripati Atmakarak – Sun, Putra Karak-Moon
A- Applying rule one, the 5th lord Mars posited in odd sign in both Vargas. It occupied the sign Sagittarius in the D-1 chart, not aspecting sign Scorpio and sign Aries in the D-9 chart. The sign Sagittarius is a trine sign from sign Aries. The Mars aspects sign Scorpio in the Navamsa. So we can’t draw any conclusion from D-9 chart but the probability of odd signs is more in the D-1 charts. Hence we will provide all the 40 marks of D-1 chart to the sign Sagittarius and 30-30 marks out of 60 for both signs of D-9 chart.
The score is – Sagittarius= 40+30=70
Scorpio= 00+30=30
(By the way, the second child of the native comes under the significance of the 7th house and the marriage partner also comes under the control of the 7th house. In this case, the 7th lord Saturn posited in the Scorpio sign in the Navamsa diagram and aspecting to the sign Leo by its 10th aspect. So the Moon sign of her second child (Priyanka) is Scorpio and the Moon sign of her spouse was Leo.)
b- The natural Karak for children is Jupiter and posited in odd sign in both Vargas, aspecting sign Sagittarius in the D-9 chart is an extra plus point for sign Sagittarius. There is no aspect to the sign Scorpio in both Vargas.
Hence the score is- Sagittarius= 70+ (40+60) =170
-Scorpio= 30+00 = 30
c- The Putra Karak planet is Moon and posited in the odd sign in both Vargas. The aspect of the sign Sagittarius in the D-1 chart and position over the sign Sagittarius in the D-9 chart is extra plus points for the sign Sagittarius. There is no aspect to the sign Scorpio in both Vargas. Hence the score is-
Sagittarius- 170+ (40+60) = 270
Scorpio – 30+00 =30
B- Now applying the second rule-
a- The 1st lord Moon= 2-9/51 and the 5th lord Mars= 8-1/10, adding together we get = 10-11/01 the sign Aquarius with Capricorn Navamsa. The odd sign with even sign in the Navamsa. So we will provide 40 marks to the sign Sagittarius and for sign Scorpio 60 marks. Hence the score is -
Sagittarius= 270+40=310
Scorpio= 30+60=90
b-The Atmakarak Sun = 7-24/04 and the Putrakarak Moon= 2-9/51; adding together we get = 10-3/55 the sign Aquarius with Scorpio navamsa; again odd sign with even Navamsa. Now the score is-
Sagittarius-310+40= 350
Scorpio- 90+60= 150
The sign Sagittarius has an astonishing augment over the sign Scorpio. Hence we can safely conclude his Moon sign is a Sagittarius sign and not the sign Scorpio, from this horoscope.
1- Now, let us examine the horoscope of Mr. Rajeeva Gandhi, his father. What was in vogue his horoscope of Leo ascendant is wrong and the horoscope of Virgo ascendant is correct. I have written a write-up on this matter and the same has got placed in the EST of November 2010 issue.

A- Now applying rule one-
The 5th lord in this horoscope is Saturn and it is posited over the sign Gemini, in the D-1 chart, and in the D-9 chart, it is seated over the sign Aquarius. In the D-1 chart it is at an odd sign additionally aspecting sign Sagittarius and the sign Scorpio is totally out of seen but in the D-9 chart though it is posited at an odd sign but aspecting sign Scorpio by its 10th aspect. So the Navamsa position of Saturn became neutral, so either we can distribute fifty-fifty marks to both signs out of 60 marks or can provide zero marks to both signs. Providing marks-
Sagittarius= 40
Scorpio = 00
b- The natural and Char Karak for children is the same in this case, and that is Jupiter. So especially for this point, we must provide double the marks as 80 for D-1 and 120 for the D-9 chart.
The Jupiter posited at sign Leo aspecting sign Sagittarius and the sign Scorpio is out of context, in the D-1 chart but in the D-9 chart, it is posited over sign Cancer, aspecting sign Scorpio, and the sign Sagittarius is totally out of the situation. Providing marks-
Sagittarius= 40+80= 120
Scorpio = 00+120 =120
B- Now applying the second rule-
The 1st lord, Mercury = 4-28/55, and the 5th lord Saturn = 2-14/13; adding together we get =7-12/48, the Scorpio sign with Libra Navamsa; an even sign in Rasi and an odd sign in the Navamsa. Providing marks-
Sagittarius= 120+60 = 180
Scorpio = 120+40 =160
b- The Atmakarak is Mercury= 4-28/35 and the Putrakarak is Jupiter = 4-12/13; adding together, we get= 9-10/48, the Capricorn sign and Aries Navamsa; the even sign in Rasi and an odd sign also trine from Sagittarius in the Navamsa. Providing marks-
Sagittarius= 180+60 = 240
Scorpio = 160+40 = 200
Here is also the sign Sagittarius has some weight over the sign Scorpio.
1- Now let us examine the horoscope of Mrs. Priyanka Gandhi his junior sister. Her birth detail and horoscope is as under-
12/01/1972, 16/42 hour at New Delhi
Wednesday, K-12, Ganda Yoga and Kolava Karan
Ascendant= 2-15/30; the 11th house= 06/48;
Atmakarak= Sun and Bhratrakarak (brother karak) = Moon 
A- Applying rule one-
The 11th house stands for elder siblings and her 11th lord Mars posited in the sign Pisces in the D-1 chart and in the D-9 chart it is seated over the sign Sagittarius. Here also the sign Sagittarius has one plus point as the 11th lord exactly posited in it in the weightier D-9 chart. Providing marks to both signs as per our rule. The sign Scorpio is a trine sign from the position of D-1 chart, so gets 40 marks and sign Sagittarius gets 60 marks as occupied by 11th lord in the D-9 chart. Hence the score is-
Sagittarius= 60
Scorpio= 40
(If we consider the 3rd house for siblings, whether elder or junior then the 3rd lord Sun posited in the sign Sagittarius in both the Vargas.)
a- The natural Karak for brother is Mars and the result for it same as above, as we have already examined its position in the form of 11th lord. So the score is –
Sagittarius= 60+60=120
Scorpio= 40+40= 80
(If we consider the planet Jupiter as a signification for elder brother than its position in the odd signs in both the Vargas and having position and aspect over sign Sagittarius will provide all the 100 marks to the sign Sagittarius.)
b- The Char Karak for brother is Moon. It is posited over the sign Scorpio in the D-1 chart and at Libra signs an odd sign, in the D-9 chart. Here sign Scorpio may get a plus point as occupied by Karak planet but in the D-1 chart! Providing marks as per our scheme.
Sagittarius= 120+60=180
Scorpio = 80+40 =120
Now applying the second rule-
B- The 1st lord, Mercury= 8-7/29 and the 11th lord, Mars= 11-17/22; adding together, we get = 7-24/51, the Scorpio sign with Aquarius Navamsa. The even sign in Rasi and odd sign in Navamsa. Providing marks as per our scheme-
Sagittarius= 180+60 = 240
Scorpio = 120+40 = 160
b- The Atmakarak, Sun= 8-27/53 and the brother Karak, Moon= 7-10/44; adding together we get=4-08/36, the sign Leo with Gemini Navamsa. Here the even signs are totally out of seen. The additional plus point in favor of sign Sagittarius is the sign Leo is trine to it and sign Gemini is 7th from it. Providing marks-
Sagittarius= 240+ (40+60) = 340
Scorpio = 160+00 = 160
Here also the sign Sagittarius has remarkable augment over sign Scorpio. Hence we can safely conclude his Moon sign as a Sagittarius sign and not the sign Scorpio, from this horoscope as well.
Observing the above three cases, we can say the Moon sign of Mr. Rahul Gandhi is Sagittarius sign and the birth star is Mula. His birth time above than 10/45 hour is indicated.
On account of some other astrological reasons, I can say his birth time is in the 3rd portion of the day if we divide the whole day into three parts and it is surely daytime. His birth ascendant may also be an odd sign or at an extreme junction of an even sign.
