Predictive astrology is built upon symbolism. The signs
and planets are not merely points in space—they are archetypes, carriers of
myth, and shapers of form. Among the many attributes they govern, hair plays an
important yet often overlooked role in shaping the human appearance. In
particular, curly hair, a striking and sometimes enigmatic trait, may
have identifiable astrological markers.
Hair and Astrology: A Symbolic Foundation
Hair is a key component of beauty and individuality. Curliness can
enhance a person’s charm when aligned with certain facial features, or
conversely, it may seem to obscure them. But what determines this trait from an
astrological perspective?
While I have yet to identify a definitive yogic combination for curly
hair, several astrological indications and symbolisms point toward its origin.
Among them is a curious suggestion from the classical text Saravali.
Navamsa and the Sun’s Appearance
This hints at the possibility that certain signs and planetary
associations may bestow this feature, especially when analyzed through the
Navamsa (D-9), which governs inner traits and physical refinement.
Symbolic and Structural Clues
Let us explore further astrological clues to curliness:
a. Aries and Curvature by Symbol
The sign Aries, symbolized by the curved horns of the ram,
suggests inherent curl or bend. This physical metaphor may extend to the nature
of hair.
Every sign influences others. In Jaimini astrology, the trines (1st,
5th, and 9th houses) are considered of similar essence, and the 7th house also
holds critical significance. Even the 4th house, receiving a 75% aspect from
the 1st, must not be ignored.
Based on this logic, signs that hold astrological sway over the
ascendant include:
- Primary
set: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, Libra
- Secondary
set: Gemini, Aquarius, Cancer
When any of these signs occupy the Ascendant, its Navamsa,
or the sign of the Ascendant lord, especially in fiery signs (Aries,
Leo, Sagittarius), the likelihood of curly hair increases, particularly when
these signs are reinforced by trinal relationships.
b. Venus – The Planet of Beauty and Hair
Venus rules beauty and sensuality, including
hair. Its presence in the Ascendant, or conjunction with the Ascendant
lord, can significantly influence hair texture. When placed in fiery or airy
signs, Venus may increase the tendency toward curliness, particularly if it’s afflicted.
c. Aridra and Purvashadha Nakshatras
According to Brihat Samhita, the nakshatra Aridra
signifies hair. Its opposite counterpart, Purvashadha, also carries this
symbolism. These nakshatras fall in Gemini and Sagittarius,
respectively—both signs associated with movement, lightness, and variation.
An old text, Krishneeyam (on Prashna or horary astrology),
reinforces this, associating Gemini with hair. Therefore, placements in
these signs or stars, especially when involving Venus or the Moon, can
enhance the potential for curly hair.
d. Affliction to Venus and Malefic Influence
When Venus is afflicted by malefics like Saturn or Mars,
it may result in abnormal or distinct hair traits—curliness being one of them.
This, however, is not a decisive factor unless supported by Ascendant-based
conditions, since such afflictions often last long durations in transit and thus
affect larger groups. Still, if the person is naturally inclined toward curly
hair (by race or heredity), even subtle planetary triggers can manifest
visibly.
